Chapter Nineteen

As we stand on the breezy plateau watching Isaac fly away, the phone in my pocket buzzes.

Man, I just cannot catch a moment to myself.

I fish out the phone and look at the screen to find a number I recognize. It's one Irena has called me from before, and despite all the tension from the conversation I just had, I breathe a small sigh of relief.

I press the phone to my ear. “I really need some good news right now, Irena.”

“Aw,” a man's voice says, the tone dark and familiar. “Is Rory having a bad day?”

I impulsively stiffen, glaring at the ground as my heart floods with dread.

Diesel.

How the hell did he get Irena’s phone?

“Your sister is dead,” he says, his tone bored and dry. “You’re next.”

I want to say something. My impulse is to throw some sarcastic quip in his face to let him know he doesn't bother me and that he can never, no matter how hard he tries, get beneath my skin.

But all I can hear are his words echoing dully in my head.

Your sister is dead.

You’re next.

Your sister is dead.

My throat tightens, and it takes everything in me to not scream into the phone. I refuse to believe it. I won't.

After everything I've done to protect Irena, I refuse to believe someone could take her from me just like that. That someone would have the gall to try. To think that in the blink of an eye my world could shatter—I won’t believe it.

I just can't.

In my blurry and hazy confusion as the surreal sensation rocks through me, I hear the faint vibration of Tucker's phone buzzing nearby. He jumps out of his Jeep, his eyes locked on the small device in his hand as he reads something on the screen, and everyone around me stiffens.

The dragons are all alert, unsure of what's going on. Jace spreads his wings, snarling as his claws dig into the dirt, his intense gaze focused on me as if he's just waiting to know who he needs to kill. Drew and Harper growl softly, their eyes darting between me and Tucker, both of them clearly confused as to what's going on.

Only Levi remains still, his intense gaze trained on me as his lip slowly curls in a snarl.

As Tucker nears, he catches my eye and silently mouths she's fine.

He hands his phone to me, and I see a group text sent between the five of us from a new number, one I've never seen before. Douche bag has my phone. Not dead.

As a silence stretches among us, I briefly check my own phone and see a text message from her as well.

“Wow, I stunned you into silence,” Diesel says through the line, shattering my train of thought. “Never thought I’d see the day when I could shut you up.”

Somehow, Diesel snatched Irena’s phone, and now he's just messing with me in an attempt to get into my head and throw me off my game.

A flood of relief nearly knocks me to the ground as I realize how close I just came to losing my sister forever.
